This training provided the best logical presentation, on discipline I've ever had in my 23 years of teaching. I have practical ideas I can use immediately. The trainer demonstrated great knowledge of classroom practices, management, and what life is like in the classroom (So few do.)
Meet Mary Iovine.
Every student can shine, one student at a time.
Relationships, respect, rapport, relevance, and rigor. Mary sees those five as what drives student achievement today, and every one of them starts with an adult who knows each student as a person.
Every student can shine at LinkingGrowth.
For more than 30 years, Mary has worked in Title I schools across the United States and abroad. She has also worked with homeschool families, and with parents who are as frustrated as their children that school no longer challenges them. One of her specialties is guiding twice-exceptional students, gifted kids who also need support, to find their own path.
She agrees with Madeline Hunter that kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. That isn't soft. Some students won't be reached academically until they've been reached as people first, and when students know an adult values them, they work harder and push back less.
Let's have this generation of students make a difference beyond their years in school.
She also knows teachers have one of the hardest jobs in the country. Every day they're asked to be a parent, a nurse, a counselor, a judge, and a jury on top of teaching. They don't need more theory or another trendy program. They need research-based strategies they can use right away, without throwing out anything that already works in their classrooms.
Mary knows how much can happen between 8:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. She brings motivation, humor, and a common-sense approach to stress, and she sends teachers home with as many practical strategies as she can fit into the day. Her standard is "No excuses, high expectations, whatever it takes," and her goal is to close the achievement gap one student at a time.
